Description

Women in Physics project was launched in 2005. It was encouraged by DST to celebrate world year of physics. The known number of women in physics was less than 25. The SAIP business account was also very low. Today, as we celebrate 20 years of women in physics, we have registered a considerable number of women in physics with PhDs and occupying positions in academia as lead researchers. We have addressed the pipeline problem, still struggling with glass ceiling, mental health and amenities for safety of women in working spaces in the night. We have more than 100 women attending our women in physics lunches at annual conference., SAIP added women in physics as a forum – and adding women in physics support structures, such as early career support, through mentoring and access to senior woman for help with personal problems. I will therefore, present the achievements of work done in the past 20 years of women in physics in South Africa.
